Direct-to-Film (DTF) printing is one of the most advanced techniques in the custom apparel industry today. It allows you to print full-color designs on film and then transfer them directly onto almost any fabric — cotton, polyester, blends, fleece, and more.

✅ What is the DTF Printing Process?

Here’s a simplified breakdown of how the DTF printing process works — from file setup to final transfer:

1️⃣ Design File Preparation

The first step is uploading your artwork. We recommend:

  • File types: PNG, AI, PSD, PDF

  • Resolution: 300 DPI

  • Transparent background (for clean cuts)

2️⃣ Printing on PET Film

Your artwork is printed directly onto PET transfer film using a DTF printer. This printer uses:

  • CMYK colors for the design

  • A white ink underbase for opacity on dark garments

This step produces a mirror image of your design.

3️⃣ Adhesive Powder Application

Right after printing, a layer of hot melt adhesive powder is sprinkled over the wet ink. This powder ensures the transfer will bond to the fabric during heat pressing.

4️⃣ Curing the Powder

The film is then cured (dried) using a heat tunnel or press. This melts the adhesive just enough to prepare it for transfer.

🔥 Curing ensures that:

  • The ink stays vibrant

  • The transfer is clean and peelable

  • The print stays bonded to the garment

5️⃣ Heat Press Transfer

Now it’s time to transfer your design!

You simply place the DTF film onto the fabric and press it using a heat press:

  • Temp: 310°F

  • Time: 10–15 seconds

  • Pressure: Medium

  • Peel: Cold peel

  • Finish: Repress with parchment for 5 seconds

Done! You now have a vibrant, flexible, and machine-washable print that lasts.
